The truth is that the V-Strom is a younger cousin of the SV650. The name is suspiciously similar that you will have found out that these two bikes are related. Suzuki took what they had with the SV650, which is already a very excellent bike, and made some improvements and the end result is the V-Strom 650. A lot of work has been put into creating a better performing engine. The engine of the V-Strom is a little better and stronger than the one installed in the SV650. Other than that, crank inertia has been improved by another 4 percent.
Suzuki V-Strom 650 features a 645 cc 90 degree V-Twin, DOHC D valve, and liquid-cooled engine. Its throttle valve system helps maintaining optimum air velocity in the intake tract for a smooth low-to-mid rpm throttle response. Besides, its Auto Fast Idling System monitors coolant temperature of the bike. Moreover, digital ignition system gives optimum ignition timing with separate maps for each cylinder.
The bike is lightweight. It has smooth shifting 6 speed transmission with cable operated clutch, which allows the bike to give great low rpm performance. Its high efficiency liquid cooling system controls temperature of the bike. Besides, the use of plastic outer clutch cover and engine sprocket contribute to the reduction of weight and noise.
The first thing that you will notice once you are riding the bike on the road is just how refined, smooth and quite the bike is. You will not notice any vibrations and noise generated by the 645 cc. v-twin engine. For some short drives, the bike does give a high level of satisfaction. The engine is punchy, torquey, strong and powerful enough to give you all the power you need at any rev range. Also, if someone tells you that the V-Strom 650 is not powerful or speedy enough, don't be fooled. The truth is that the V-Strom is more than good enough for all types of biking you will do. The silky smooth gear change coupled with a punchy engine as well as the solid chassis means that you will get a lot out of each drive.
In the handling department, the V-Strom 650 also feels a little different than the V-Strom 1000. The bike with the smaller engine size here feels quick, agile and nimble, where as the 1000 has that bulkier feel. The great handling of the bike is contributed by a solid foundation of the bike, good and solid chassis, lightweight materials and flawless suspension set up.
So should you get the V-Strom 650? The bike is fast and powerful enough for you to dust most other bikers. Derived and improved from the SV650, the V-Strom is more comfortable and provides a much better protection against the wind thanks to the effective set up of the windshield.
